What I saw while interviewing K1–Agbaletu producer

Followers of the Agbaletu podcast had waited; Mr Dele Adeyanju, the producer noted their urge and responded accordingly. Fate brought him face-to-face with the most celebrated fuji musician today, K1 and the rest is packaged in the exclusive interview he uploaded two days ago. Adeyanju shares his experience with K1 inside his magnificent residence at the GRA, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State. Excerpts.

When did you first hear about K1?

I grew up knowing him among fuji musicians.

When was your first contact with him?

That was on April 1. I sent a text message to him and indicated my interest to interview him. He responded almost immediately with a text message.

What did he tell you?

He said it would have been better if I had reached out to him during the month of Ramadan when he was less busy. He said he would work it out and commended my programme.

When did you meet each other finally?

It was a coincidence at Baba Obey’s birthday in Lagos on April 3. I was there for Agbaletu and Adaminmogo radio, my employer, to cover the occasion. In a moment, I saw him coming and I walked up to him and introduced myself. He was warmly. We spoke, he held my hand and said he liked my programme. He shocked me when he sang my praise during his brief performance.

Was it there you sealed the interview eventually?

Not really. But I later received a text message to be in his house in Ijebu-Ode last Tuesday. But at 4 am on Tuesday, he said he needed to attend to an urgent matter.

That meant a reschedule?

Yes, the following day, by 930 am, we were in his residence and well received, from the entrance. He came to us at 12 noon. He hosted us at his private living room where we spent more than two hours on the interview.

Against the backdrop of all you might have heard about K1, can you share your impression of him during interview, in particular?

I make bold to say he is a contrast to public perception of his personality. I had heard that he was a bully, unruly, disrespectful. I saw none of these. I saw a friendly man who expressed his personal likeness to me and encouraged me.

Is that all?

No. We gisted beyond the interview schedule. He was so free and lively. He led us on a tour of his resort, showing us the facilities there.

What is your summary of that journey?

It was an eventful one.
