The beauty of Nigerian landscape

Some times, all you need to heal a weary soul is a good dose of nature. And what better place to find this than in Nigeria, a country painted with the hues of nature’s finest brush? Nigeria isn’t just about the noise of Lagos traffic or the buzz of politics; it’s a land where nature speaks gently to the heart, where every mountain, river, and savannah whisper stories that soothe the mind and uplift the spirit.

Take a trip to the Obudu Mountain Resort in Cross River, and you’ll see what I mean. Perched high like a royal crown on the head of the earth, Obudu greets you with a cool breeze that feels like a mother’s soft lullaby. The rolling hills, covered in lush greenery, seem to stretch their arms towards the sky in praise. It’s almost as if the clouds come down to hug the trees. Standing there, one foot on earth and the other in wonder, your mood can’t help but dance to nature’s rhythm. Whatever was weighing your heart will begin to melt like sugar in hot tea.

Then there’s the mysterious Ikogosi Warm and Cold Springs in Ekiti state. Two springs, side by side, one warm, one cold, flowing harmoniously without losing their identity. Isn’t that a metaphor for life itself? Differences don’t always mean division. Watching the twin springs merge in peaceful coexistence makes me reflect on the human spirit’s capacity for balance. I often leave Ikogosi feeling more centered, more at peace with my contradictions and complexities.

And who can forget the savannahs of the North? Driving through Kaduna or parts of Jos, the golden grasslands spread out like a royal carpet. The Baobab trees stand tall like ancient elders, watching over the land with quiet authority. Their stillness speaks volumes. Some times, I pull over just to sit by the roadside, letting the wind comb through my thoughts. The landscape doesn’t shout; it whispers, and in those whispers, I find clarity.

Nigeria’s waterfalls deserve a standing ovation. Erin-Ijesha Waterfalls in Osun state, for instance, isn’t just water cascading down rocks. It’s an orchestra of nature. Each drop hits a note, and together they compose a melody that massages the mind. Climbing up the rocky paths, with water splashing on your face and birds chirping overhead, you feel like a child again—joyful, free, and alive. Omo, body go dey sweet you!

Nature here has a way of wiping tears you didn’t even know you had. The view from Idanre Hills in Ondo is one such tear-wiper. As you climb the ancient steps carved into the rocks, your legs may protest, but your spirit cheers you on. And when you reach the top, what greets you is not just a panoramic view of the town below, but also a deep sense of accomplishment. The landscape is like a mirror, showing you your strength and reminding you of life’s quiet beauties.

The mangrove forests of the Niger Delta, too, are a sight to behold. Despite the environmental challenges, they remain symbols of resilience. Floating in a canoe, surrounded by thick green canopies, you almost forget the worries of the world. The air is thick with peace, and the water gently rocks you into meditation. There, even silence has a sound.

Truth be told, Nigeria’s natural wonders are not just pretty places for photos or tourism brochures. They are emotional balms. When the chaos of daily life begins to choke the joy out of me, I run not to malls or movies, but to the arms of nature. She never fails to wrap me in peace.

If you ever feel overwhelmed, maybe it’s time to step outside. Breathe in Nigeria. Let her rivers, hills, and valleys tell you stories. Let her skies paint your soul with light. In this land, even the earth knows how to dance and when you walk barefoot on her soil, she teaches your spirit to do the same.

Nigeria, my beautiful land
The ọmọlúàbí of the earth
You are more than home. You are healing.

Dear readers, have you been to any of the places I mentioned? If yes, kudos to you, you’ve tasted a piece of heaven right here at home. If not, I encourage you to take a break from the hustles and bustles and pay nature a visit. Unwind all that built-up tension, just like the Òyìnbó folks do when they escape to Disney World. Trust me, Nigeria’s natural wonders offer magic of their own—real, raw, and refreshing.
