From personally taking charge of regularly intractable traffic gridlock to filling potholes, the Divisional Police Officer of Ejigbo Division, Olabisi Okuwobi, a Chief Superintendent of Police, has made a distinct mark among 24 DPOs who had passed through the division since it was carved out of Isolo Divisional Headquarters in 1998.
Latest feather to her cap was the recent commissioning of a new building facilitated through her ethical conduct to a patriotic Nigerian who doubles as the Chief Executive Officer of Grooming Centre, Dr Godwin Nwabunka.
The Commissioner of Police of Lagos State Command, Hakeem Odumosu, it was gathered, could have asked his second in command to stand for him at the official commissioning of the new building on Tuesday.
The Tabloid.net gathered that Odumosu had also been scheduled to hold a meeting with senior officers at the command headquarters in Ikeja, the seat of Lagos State Government at the same time.
However, he pushed the meeting forward to demonstrate his acknowledgement of the DPO’s strides in changing the mindset of the public to Ejigbo, a Lagos suburb hitherto notorious for its volatility.
Shortly before he commissioned the building, the CP saluted the building donor’s gesture for identifying with the Police where it mattered and wished him well in his endeavours. Odumosu also expressed gratitude to the Chairman of Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, HonourbaleMonsuru Oloyede Bello for his consistent support for the division.
“His donation of two new patrol Sienna Vans today for the patrol of communities in Ejigbo LCDA is highly commendable and worthy of emulation by other public officeholders. On our part, it will be my pleasure to set in motion actions for deployment of additional Police officers to Ejigbo and judiciously utilize the vehicles for purposes which they are meant in order to deliver on your security needs,” he noted.
In the Cp’s company to the event included the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), DCP TunjiDisu, Area Commanders of Area D, Mushin, Area B, Apapa, Area F, Ikeja, Area M, Idimu, Area E, Festac, and some Divisional Police Officers around the areas including the Police Public Relations Officer, OlumuyiwaAdejobi, a Superintendent of Police.
After the commissioning, Odumose used the opportunity to pay a condolence visit to the family bereaved of the late Favour Ikechukwu , who was allegedly gang-raped to death on September 30, 2020 at Olanrewaju Street, Ejigbo.
On behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP MuhammedAbubakarAdamu, the CP promised the family that the fleeing suspects would be brought to book to get justice for the deceased and the family.
He, therefore, directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department, DCP YetundeLonge, to mobilise her detectives to ensure the suspects were smoked out of their hideout for prompt prosecution.
In his remark at the commissioning, DrNwabunka, who described himself as global civil servant having worked for the United Nations for about 20 years, said he worked together with management of his company after which he got the nod to embark on the project, adding that the DPO’s disposition to her work impelled him to show interest in the project.
The Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) of Ejigbo Division, MrKolapoAyindeEludipo told The Tabloid, net that since his executive came on board in July 2019 and worked closely with Okuwobi, results had met their expectations of an officer who knows her onions in community policing, especially.
“We found her a pride of Nigeria Police with her total conduct which speaks further about her training and upbringing. We are all encouraged to support her efforts to leave the division better than she met it. Already we are also working on a building to be completed next year,” he said.
Similarly, the Treasurer of the PCRC, Engineer Adesina Ibrahim commended the DPO urging her to continue on the track. Ibrahim disclosed that the PCRC ongoing construction is a multi-million naira project aimed at supporting the division to have more decent work environment.
Okuwobi could not hide her joy, especially for the presence of her boss, the CP, whom she knew had valid reason to have missed the occasion. In her emotional welcome address, she appreciated DrNwabuka and all who had shown commitment to an improved Ejigbo Division since she became the substantive DPO.
Speaking with The Tabloid.net, Okuwobi advised the officers and rank to de-emphasise urge for money and protect their professional ethics, saying an appreciable number of eminent Nigerians are ready to support the police.
“We should respect ourselves by not settling for few naira notes. Let our work speak for us and we shall be better appreciated. It is high time we changed from that past. I am not saying money is not important. But we should know that integrity attracts more value. I think that is what gave us this building. I thank everybody from Kabiyesi to the chairman of the LCDA to the PCRC and all my superior officers who came to honour us today,” she remarked.
