Allowed to rest

There are days when everything just feels like too much. Nothing particularly dramatic has happened, but somehow you are tired of your phone, tired of people, tired of responsibilities and, if we are being honest, slightly tired of yourself too.

The funny thing about stress is that it does not always announce itself. Sometimes, it is just you getting irritated by everything. A message you would normally ignore suddenly annoys you. Someone asks you a simple question and you are wondering why they are disturbing your peace. You are lying down, but your mind is busy running through ten different problems at once.

And in those moments, perhaps what you need is not another motivational speech about working harder. Maybe you need to stop.

We have become so used to constantly doing something that doing nothing can almost feel wrong. There is always something to reply, somewhere to be, something to submit, someone to call, money to find or a problem to solve. Even when we finally lie down, our minds refuse to close for the day.

Sometimes, you just need to leave things alone for a while.
Take a walk without turning it into exercise. Sit outside and watch people pass.

Put your phone on silent. Listen to that one song you have played a hundred times. Take a long shower. Eat something nice. Sleep. Laugh with your friends about something completely useless. Pray. Cry if you need to. Or simply lie down and stare at the ceiling like the main character in a low-budget Nigerian movie.

Not every moment of rest has to be productive.
You also do not have to explain your exhaustion to everybody. Sometimes you are allowed to say, “I am tired,” and leave it there. You do not need a detailed explanation, and you certainly do not need to prove that you have suffered enough to deserve a break.
Life will still be waiting when you return.

The bills will still be there. School will still have assignments. Work will still have deadlines. People will still have expectations. But you will have had a moment to breathe before facing them again.

Maybe that is what destressing really is. Not escaping your life completely, but giving yourself enough room to remember that you are a person living it.

So, when everything starts feeling too loud, take a step back. Rest without guilt. Disconnect without announcing it. Do something that makes you feel like yourself again.

The world can survive without your attention for a few hours.
And honestly, you probably can too.
