In this interview with TheTabloid.net, the community man and lover of youth shares his view on late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi. Excerpts
Late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi rescued 262 Christians from religious clash in 2018 in Plateau State. How did you receive the news?
The news of the demise of Late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi came as a rude shock and was also devastating, given his impact in society, his liberal-minded, sound, and balanced teaching, godly acts, and compassion. He exhibited uncommon love and kindness, even at the risk of his own life and those of his family members, and also his religious standing. Ordinarily, one would wish he lived a little bit longer, knowing that death is inevitable. May Allah repose his soul with Al-jannah Firdaus.
Did you expect such behavior from an Islamic cleric?
In all honesty, I did. It is heartwarming to hear about Imam Abubakar’s selfless act in rescuing 262 Christians from a religious clash in Plateau State in 2018. I think his action aligns with Islamic teachings of compassion and kindness. The Holy Quran emphasizes the importance of justice, mercy, and respect for all people, regardless of faith (Quran 60:8). That notwithstanding, an extremist would act in a contrary manner.
Which kind of relationship do you expect among all faiths adherents?
The kind of relationship I expect among all faiths adherents is that of love, mutual respect, understanding, peaceful coexistence, and tolerance. Humanity should come first in all we do or say. The way we relate with people gives a reflection of our relationship with God. As a Christian, one is commanded to love ALL. The Bible states categorically that God is love (1 John 4:8). And without faith, it is impossible to please Him (Hebrews 11:6).
Is religious tension and hostility necessary?
To say the fact, the religious tension and hostility being generated are distractions and not necessary in any way. It is a waste of time and resources. I strongly believe that some people, who are benefiting from it, are the sponsors. If all religions are preaching peace and love, why then the wanton killings and destruction of properties? It is crude and barbaric to engage in killings and destruction of properties, mayhem, and civil unrest in the name of religion. It is high time we started living according to the dictates of our Holy Books and not emotions. As Christians, we are called to love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31). I expect all faith adherents to have a relationship built on mutual respect, understanding, and kindness.
Is it worth it to fight for God, the all-knowing?
In my opinion, God is strong and powerful enough to defend Himself. It would not have been difficult for God to institute a one-religion-world if He desired it to be so. Fighting for God is a deception. People perpetrating it have ulterior motives, doing it for selfish and personal gains, wealth, fame, power, and many more. It is unfortunate that religion has become a veritable tool in the hand or our politicians to divide, distract and deprive us of our peace and wealth. Interfaith cooperation can address common challenges like poverty, inequality, and environmental sustainability. God’s all-knowing nature means He does not need our defense. Sure God is not happy with the development.
What should the government do to the bereaved family of the late Imam, in terms of honor and privileges?
The government should honour the late Imam Abubakar’s family with recognition and support, acknowledging his selfless act. This could include providing financial assistance, security, or other forms of aid to ensure their well-being. The Federal Government can give a posthumous national award to the late Imam. Plateau State Government can name a prominent facility after him.
