I got a job in bank but joined Nigerian Tribune–editor

Mr Rotimi Ige is Entertainment and Enterpreneurship editor of the Nigerian Tribune. His career, birthed in 2009 after graduation from the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, the Niger State capital, is a trajectory of the good, the better and the best. Also an Agricultural Economist, Ige, speaks with TheTabloid.net on his steady rise to his current designation. Excerpts

Are you a journalist by design or it’s accidental?

I will say a mixture of both. It was God’s design. I had been offered an appointment to work in a bank and another World Bank financed Agricultural initiative. At the same time, I got another offer to join the Nigerian Tribune family. I decided to join the Nigerian Tribune instead as it offered me better flexibility and an opportunity to fulfil my dreams of travelling and meeting people that matter. Also I found in it a platform to make my voice and opinions heard across the world.

How did you start?

I joined the newsroom and gradually found means of expression. I am thoroughly grateful to the amazing colleagues and bosses that I interacted with. I was trained in the Tribune House as they helped me see the bigger picture and realities of the profession. I make bold to say that God used them to make my journey smooth and impactful. I am eternally grateful to all my Tribune family members.

How did you cope?

Coping was quite easy with colleagues and bosses who knew one’s capacity and didn’t overstretch. My editors understood my kind of person and allowed me express myself without unnecessary pressure. That is one thing that Tribune excels at. They allow personal expansion and growth.

Can you share major highlights of your career?

There are so many of them. The job has given me wings to cross continents and enabled me be part of almost every major entertainment event in Nigeria. From Ultimate Search, Big Brother, Nigerian Idol, name it, I have been a media affiliate to most of the events year in, year out. I have become a regular and respected voice in the entertainment industry, and that is a major win!

What are challenges of being a journalist?

Creating an identity or niche on your beat can be challenging but where there is a will, there will be a way. Always keep pushing and you will realise that challenge is only a bus stop in Ibadan! Also, always go beyond the newsroom to hunt stories and get exclusives. Be the go to authority on your chosen beat and you will excel. Also use your platform to help as many people as possible.
