‘Govt should look into the sea to create opportunities’

Nigeria’s overdependence on crude oil, accounting for 90% of her revenue, has arguably resulted into neglect of sectors such as manufacturing and agricultural sectors which have huge potentials to further sustain the nation’s economy.

Another unexplored sector is highlighted by Founder of the BBFresh Seafood Store, Ogunmilua Olayinka while fielding questions from TheTabloid.net correspondent in her Ibadan office penultimate Tuesday.

Olayinka passionate urged the federal government to look more into bed of the sea where existed, according to her research, various species of sea food.

She emphasised that the government needs to pay more attention to the waters to explore what she called so much value, not tapping well.

“Nigeria is blessed with plenty of water and access to the ocean, yet we still depend too much on imported seafood. To me, this shows that the problem is not that we don’t have seafood, but that we have not developed what we already have,” she revealed.

With her over a decade history in the business, she daily sees how people look for good, quality seafood and how supply is not always sufficient, hence her call for government’s change of policy to local fishing, fish farming, and proper storage.

According to her, “more people will be able to produce seafood here in Nigeria. And, this will reduce our dependence on imports and help keep more money within the country. For businesses like mine, better local production will make it easier to get fresh and good-quality seafood consistently.”

She added, “it will also help keep prices more stable and allow more Nigerians to have access to healthy seafood without relying so much on foreign products.

“Looking into the sea is not just about business; it is about feeding our people and creating opportunities. If the Nigeria government takes its seafood sector seriously, our waters can support local businesses, create jobs, and make quality seafood available to more homes across the country.”
